Skills are learned abilities of your character. The skill level shows us how good your character is at the skill. Skill levels are increased by allocating skill points into them whenever you level up. The amount of skill points you can distribute is equal to ((5 + Intelligence) * .5), rounded down. Skills can also be improved temporary by reading Skill Magazines or permanently with Skill Books.
The initial number for each skill is 2 + Associated Stat. At the beginning of each player character's creation, they choose up to three skills to tag. Tagged Skills instantly add 15 to the initial skill number. Whenever you distribute a skill point into a tagged skill, you add 2 instead of 1. Tagged skills define your character from the start of the game.
Some Skills have Sub-Skills, which have a initial value of 1/3 the base skill, rounded down. For example, if you have 9 in Light Weapons, you'll have 3 in the sub-skill, "Light, Shotgun". Remember to always add 1 to these sub-skills whenever you get to a multiple of 3.
You can choose to add a skill point to a sub-skill so you don't have to waste 3 on the general, mothering skill. This will not increase the mothering skill or the other subskills, however.
